Life-sized human digestive system

 This pattern contains links to all of the digestive system patterns I've created, plus details on how to put them all together. It also contains the pattern for making the oesophogus (as this was too simple to merit a pattern of its own)

You will need:

• 2.5mm crochet hook
• Anchor creativa fino cotton in coral pink
• Polyester toy stuffing
• A darning needle
• The following crocheted organs: Stomach; Small intestine; Large intestine; Liver; Gall bladder; Pancreas; Appendix

For the oesophagus:

With a 2.5mm hook and coral pink yarn ch12

Round 1: sc in the first chian st you made, then sc in every following chain st to make a loop (12sc)
Rounds 2 - 78 (77 rounds) sc in each st

Fasten off

This should reasure approx. 25cm long (you may wish to alter the number of rounds if this is not the case). Stuff the length of it.

To make up:

The bottom of the oesophagus should be sewn to the opening of the stomach, as shown below.

After this you should sew the start of the small intestine to the lower end of the stomach

Sew the end of the small intestine to the hole in the side of the large intestine.

Sew the appendix to the start of the large intestine, as shown below

Sew the gall bladder underneath the liver

Then sew the pancreas to the curve at the top of the small intestine. It should tuck behind the stomach, as shown below.

Sew the free end of the gall bladder to the side of the small intesting, as shown below.

Appendix

 This life-sized appendix forms a small part of a larger project I have been working on to crochet all the organs of the digestive system.

Difficulty:

Easy

You will need:

• Anchor creativa fino cotton in light orange
• A 2mm crochet hook
• Black embroidery thread
• An embroidery needle
• A pair of scissors

The appendix is a small organ just found off the start of your large intestine that is often thought to not have much function, other than becoming infected and needing to be removed. However, scientists now think that it plays a role in your immune system, helping to replace the good bacteria in your gut when they're lost. You can find out more about how it does that by watching this SciShow video.

For the appendix:
make a magic loop with 6sc
Rounds 1 - 7: (7 rounds) Sc in each st
Rounds 8 - 9: (2 rounds) Slip2, sc, hdc2, sc
Rounds 10 - 23: (14 rounds) Sc in each st
Fasten off

Fun fact:
The first depiction of an appendix is thought to have been drawn in 1492 by Leonardo Da Vinci.

For the face:
Embroider the face onto the front of the appendix using embroidery thread.

Brain ventricles and corpus collosum

This is part of a series of patterns I'm gradually releasing that form an anatomically correct human brain. I have already released the pattern for the brainstem/cerebellum.

The corpus collosum is a fibrous band that connects the 2 brain hemispheres together. The ventricles house the cerebral spinal fluid.

You will need:

• A 2mm crochet hook
• A 1mm crochet hook
• Rico essentials crochet cotton in blue
• Anchor creativa fino cotton in white
• Polyester toy stuffing

For the ventricles:
Use blue cotton and a 1mm hook throughout

For the right ventricle:

Ch5

Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. Make 3sc in the back of the first chain st you made, then sc in the back loop of the previous 2 chain sts you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (10sc)

Sew in all loose ends and sew closed any openings (like where you made the ch3 across the gap and the remaining sts you didn't crochet into on round 9)

For the intraventical foramen (make 2):

Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next st. ch1, turn (2sc)
Row 2: Sc in both sts
Fasten off

Sew one edge of each of these sections to the top of the 3rd/4th ventricles. Sew the opposite end to approximately row 11 on the left/right ventricle sections (see below)

For the corsum collosum:
With white yarn and a 2mm hook ch25
Round 1: Hdc in the 2nd st from hook and the next chain st. In the next chain sts: make 2sc in the first st, sc3, make 2sc in the next st, sc13, make 2sc in the following st, make 2hdc in each of the next 2sts, make 2sc in the first chain st you made, ch1, in the back loops of the previous chain sts you crocheted into: sc2tog, sc5, sc2tog, sc12, hdc, make 2hdc in the first chain st you crocheted into (53sts)
Rounds 2 - 5: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Round 6: (Note that this is slightly over 1 round) Sc3tog, sc4, sc2tog, sc13, sc2tog, hdc2tog twice, sc, sc3tog, sc6, make 2sc in the next st, sc10, sc2tog, sc3tog
