Life-sized human digestive system

This pattern contains links to all of the digestive system patterns I've created, plus details on how to put them all together. It also contains the pattern for making the oesophogus (as this was too simple to merit a pattern of its own)

Difficulty:

Medium

You will need:
For the oesophagus:
With a 2.5mm hook and coral pink yarn ch12
Round 1: sc in the first chian st you made, then sc in every following chain st to make a loop (12sc)
Rounds 2 - 78 (77 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

This should reasure approx. 25cm long (you may wish to alter the number of rounds if this is not the case). Stuff the length of it.

To make up:
The bottom of the oesophagus should be sewn to the opening of the stomach, as shown below.
After this you should sew the start of the small intestine to the lower end of the stomach

Sew the end of the small intestine to the hole in the side of the large intestine.

Sew the appendix to the start of the large intestine, as shown below

Sew the gall bladder underneath the liver
Then sew the pancreas to the curve at the top of the small intestine. It should tuck behind the stomach, as shown below.
Sew the free end of the gall bladder to the side of the small intesting, as shown below.

That's all for this pattern - I hope you've enjoyed it! If you have any questions please feel free to email them to lhodginscrochet@gmail.com.
As always you're very welcome to sell finished products, but I do ask that you don't re-post this pattern or claim it as your own.

Appendix

This life-sized appendix forms a small part of a larger project I have been working on to crochet all the organs of the digestive system.

Difficulty:

Easy

You will need:
  • Anchor creativa fino cotton in light orange
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • Black embroidery thread
  • An embroidery needle
  • A pair of scissors
The appendix is a small organ just found off the start of your large intestine that is often thought to not have much function, other than becoming infected and needing to be removed. However, scientists now think that it plays a role in your immune system, helping to replace the good bacteria in your gut when they're lost. You can find out more about how it does that by watching this SciShow video.

For the appendix:
make a magic loop with 6sc
Rounds 1 - 7: (7 rounds) Sc in each st
Rounds 8 - 9: (2 rounds) Slip2, sc, hdc2, sc
Rounds 10 - 23: (14 rounds) Sc in each st
Fasten off

Fun fact:
The first depiction of an appendix is thought to have been drawn in 1492 by Leonardo Da Vinci.

For the face:
Embroider the face onto the front of the appendix using embroidery thread.

That's all from this pattern - I hope you have enjoyed it! If you did I have lots of other similar patterns available on this blog and many more ready to publish in the near future - you can see what I have designed so far and am currently working on by following my InstagramThat's also a good place to contact me if you have any questions about this or any of my other patterns. Pancreas

This pancreas pattern is part of a series of patterns I am making of life-sized organs in the human body. The eyes are optional extras that can be added to make the organ cuter (but aren't strictly necessary)

Difficulty:
Easy - medium

You will need:
  • A 2.5mm hook
  • A 2mm hook
  • 1 ball of anchor creativa fino cotton 4ply in lemon
  • black 4ply yarn
  • White sewing cotton
  • A darning needle
  • A regular sewing needle
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • A pair of scissors
Tension:
The tension for this project isn't particularly important, as human organs are highly variable, but the tension I used was approx. 13sts and 14 rows per 5x5cm square (working in the round).

The pancreas is part of out digestive system. It sits just off the small intestine and secretes enzymes that help break down food. It also releases hormones such as insulin and glucagon that help to regulate our blood sugar levels. You can learn more about the pancreas by watching this TED-Ed video.

For the pancreas:
Note that this section is designed such that the 'wrong side' (the one that is more bumpy) is outside
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: sc in each st
Round 2: (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (9sc)
Round 3: sc in each st

Round 47: Hdc4, sc5, slip1, sc
Round 48: (less than 1 round) Hdc4, sc, slip4, sc
Stuff
Round 49: (less than 1 round) (Sc2tog, sc) 3 times, sc (8sc)
Round 50: Sc2tog 3 times (5sc)
Fasten off
Fold the end section back on itself and sew in place, as shown in the images below.

Fun fact 1:
The man who discovered the pancreatic duct (a small tube inside the pancreas that the digestive enzymes travel along to reach the small intestine), Johann Georg Wirsung was murdered a year after naming this structure after himself. It was through that this murder was the result of a disagreement over who had first discovered the duct.

For the eyes (make 2):
With black 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook make a magic loop with 6sc
Fasten off

Use white thread to embroider highlights onto each eye then sew them to the face. Use black yarn to embroider eyebrows and a mouth. You can also add other facial features if you wish.

Fun fact 2:
The pancreas contains 'taste buds' similar to those seen on the tongue that help it to detect the levels of glucose in the blood and release the appropriate hormones.

Large intestine

This large intesting pattern is part of a series of patterns I'm releasing that fit together to create a complete digestive tract. I have altready published a lot of these patterns, including those for the small intestine and the stomach.

Difficulty:

Medium

You will need:
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Anchor creativa fino 4ply cotton in apricot (at least 3 balls)
  • cream dk cotton
  • Black dk yarn (for the eyes - optional)
  • A scrap of white embroidery thread (optional)
  • A darning needle
  • Polyester toy stuffing

Note:
  • This pattern includes the back-to-front single crochet stitch (bfsc). A video to show you how to do this can be found here. It's pretty simple but if you can't work it out you can just use a regular single crochet stitch, but this will give it a slightly different look.
  • Ideally the slip stitches on the rows using bfsc should also be made in this way, pulling the yarn through from the side facing you to the opposite side. Again it's not fundamanetal to the pattern but it improves the look of the piece.

For the intestine:

Fasten off neatly

Stuff firmly
Sew up the holes made when making the 2nd turn (around row 180)

Finally with cream yarn and a 2.5mm hook make one 95cm long chain and sew this to the outer side of the intestine. Make a, 83cm long chain and sew this to the inside. This should start at the base and reach up until the start of the rectum (see image below)

For the eyes (make 2):
These are optional but make the intestine look more cute and cuddly.
With black 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook make a magic loop with 6sc
Fasten off

Use white thread to embroider highlights onto each eye then sew them to the face.
