Anatomical lungs

These lungs have been designed to be as realistic as possible, with each of the lobes made individually and sewn together afterwards. The right lobe consists of 3 lobes, whilst the left lung is made up of 2. They are made to fit inside the ribcage of my life-sized anatomical skeleton.

Difficulty:
Easy - medium
The most difficult part oft this project is the shaping, but this doesn't have to be perfect, since all lungs have significant differences between them

You will need:
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Anchor creativa fino 4ply crochet cotton in lilac/pink
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • 0.5mm craft wire
  • A darning needle for sewing up
  • A small number of bobby pins
  • A pair of scissors

For the right lung:
For the superior lobe:
Note: Whilst you make this you should keep a feew of the stitch markers in place to signify the beginning and end of tsome of teh rows. This will help with shaping later on

Stuff and sew up the base of this section (where you skipped 27)

You now need to shape this section of the lung. This is done by using a darning needle and a length of yarn, then making repeated stitches through the body of the lung and pulling tightly. The most important part of shaping is creating a ridge that runs down where the start/end of each round is. This starts around round 13 and works its way down to ~ round 50. The idea of this is to allow the lung to curve in on itself.

If you are unsure about what shaping needs to be done to the lung, feel free to have a look at this lung model - the ridge you are trying to create is the create just to the left of the main bronchus (6)
(please ignore the other lobes in these photos - hopefully you should be able to get an idea of the shaping needed from looking at them)

Before you sew this section to the superior lobe you will need to add wire around the lower (cast-off) edge to stiffen it, and add some shaping to it. The images below show the positioning of the middle lobe with respect to the superior lobe.

Start by pinning your lobes together, then take 3 lengths of wire ~18cm long. Plait them together to strengthen the wire section. After this you need to insert the wire into the lobe. It should line the edge of the section of the lobe that isn't in contact with the superior lobe, as shown below.

After inseting the wire into the lobe  you need to sew it in place by stitching around the edge of this section, just in from where the wire is situated.

You then need to sew the 2 lobes together, as shown in the photos below (this should be identical to where you'd previously pinned them)

For the upper part of the inferior lobe:

Line up the seams of the upper and lower sections of the inferior lobe, as shown below

Stuff lightly between these  layers and sew the seams closed. Note that most of the stuffing should be positioned at the top of the lobes (or the base looking at them in the images above), above where the cast-on region from the lower lobe section is located.
Sew this section to the base of the superior lobe, as shown in the images below. One edge of it should overlap with the side of the middle lobe, as shown in the first few images.

Fasten off

Once you have created this lobe you will need to shape it. Start by pinning the lobe to the left superior lobe, as shown below. We will be stitching grooves in the lobe to make it line up better with the underside of the upper lung

The 2 main grooves should be sewn starting from the top of the lobe either side of the starting chain stitches. These grooves should work their way down the right side of the lung (looking at the image above), meeting around halfway down the lung. A single groove should then be continued down this edge until you reach the base of the lobe. The exact positioning of each of these grooves will depend on where you pinned the inferior to the superior lobe. This can be seen in the images below.

You will also need to make stitches through the lower right section of this lobe (looking at the image below) to flatten it.

Sew up the base of this lobe (as well as where you skipped the stitches on rows 56/57)

Finally sew the superior and inferior lobes together, as shown below

For the trachea and bronchioles:
Ch14
Round 1: sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in each following chain st to make a loop (14sc)
Rounds 2 - 36: (35 rounds) sc in each st
Round 37: Ch4, skip7, sc7
Round 38: Hdc in the 4 chain sts, hdc, sc5, hdc (11sts)
Rounds 39 - 41: Sc in each st (3 rounds)
Round 42: Sc, ch2, skip5, sc5
Round 43: Hdc, hdc in each of the chain sts, hdc, slip4 (8sts)
Rounds 44 - 45: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

Rejoin yarn to round 41 to the same st as you crocheted into before making the ch2

Round 42: Sc in this st and the next 5, ch2
Round 43: Hdc in the first st of the last round, slip4, hdc3 (8sts)
Rounds 44 - 47: (3 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

Rejoin yarn to round 36 to the st after the last one you crocheted into
Round 37: Sc7, ch4, sc7
Round 38: Hdc in the first st of last round, sc5, hdc5 (11sts)
Rounds 39 - 48: (10 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 49: Ch3, skip5, sc6
Round 50: hdc in each of the chain sts, sc, slip4, sc (9sts)
Round 51: hdc3, sc, slip4, sc
Rounds 52 - 53: (2 rounds) Sc in each st
Fasten off

Rejoin yarn to round 48 to the same st as you crocheted into before you made the ch3

Round 49: Sc in this st and the next 5sts, ch3
Round 50: Sc in the first st of last round, slip4, sc, hdc3 (9sts)
Rounds 51 - 55: (5 rounds) Sc in each st
Fasten off

Stuff

The ends of the bronchii need to be sewn to the inner sides of the lungs. They should be sewn to the superior lobe approximately 1/3 of the way from the top, with the longer bronchii being sewn to the left lung (as shown below)

That's all from this pattern, I hope you have enjoyed it! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, specifically if you're stuck with the shaping. You can leave a comment below, or message me on my Ravelry page, through the best way to contact me is through my Instagram page, where you can keep updated with all the projects I'm currently working on. As always you are very welcome to sell finished items but I do ask that you don't re-post this pattern or claim it as your own.
