Life-sized foot skeleton

This is part of a series of patterns I'm making that build up to create a life-sized human skeleton. This pattern contains all of the bones of the foot, along with the majority of the ligaments. I've also recently released a round-up of all patterns I've published so far in this series if you enjoy this one.

Difficulty:

Medium - difficult
This pattern is fairly complex, and the bones can be pretty fiddly. However, the stitches used aren't difficult. If you would like to give it a go, I'll be happy to help you if you get stuck :)

You will need:
  • A 1mm crochet hook
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • anchor creative fino 4ply in white
  • Rico essentials #10 crochet cotton in white and smokey blue
  • Polyester stuffing
  • A darning needle
  • An embroidery needle
  • A pair of sharp scissors

Right foot

Part A: The bones

Section 1: The phalanges
I have referred to the toes in this section in the same way as you would refer to fingers (pinkie, ring, index etc.) to make it clear which one I am referring to. You should use a 1mm hook and #10 crochet cotton for the phalanges unless otherwise specified.

For the shaping:
Stuff the main body fof the bone, then sew the posterior facet and sustentaculum tali in place as shown below. (in the first image the posterior facet is the bump facing you, and the sustentaculum tali is on top). You may also wish to enlarge the ridge on the opposite side of the bone to where these are sewn by making repeated stitches back and forth. This can be seen in the second image. (If you'd like to see a video tutorial for the assembly of this bone let me know because it's quite hard to explain with images!)

Stuff anf sew this section to the base of the talus, as shown in the images below

Part B: The foot ligaments

Making up:
Place the medial (first) cuneiform so that the cast-off edge is on the top, with the little point at the base of the bone pointing downwards (see below).

Place the intermediate (second) cuneiform to the right of the first, again with the cast-off edge at the top and the point at the base pointing downwards.

For the dorsal C1-C2 intercuneiform ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 2sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in both of these sts. ch1, turn
Row 3: sc in both sts
Fasten off

Sew on edge of this (perpendicular to the grain of the rows) to the left-hand side of the face closest to you on intermediate cuneiform. Sew the other edge to the lower right-hand side of the face closest to you on the medial cuneiform (as shown below)

Place the lateral (third) cuneiform to the right of the intermediate one. The cast off edge should be facing towards you, with the largest side next to the intermediate cuneiform. (as shown below)

For the dorsal C2-3 intercuneiform ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one side of this to the centre of the left-hand side of the lateral cuneiform (on the side facing you), and the other side to the right-hand side of the intermediate cuneiform, as shown below

Place the cuboid next to the lateral cuneiform of that the cast-off edge is at the top and the point on the top is lying flat, as shown below.

For the dorsal cubo-cuneiform3 ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next st. ch1, turn
Rows 2 - 3 (2 rows) sc in these 2sts. ch1, turn
Row 4: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off
Sew one edge of this to the lower left-hand side of the face closest to you on the lateral cuneiform. The other edge should be sewn to the left-hand side of the face closest to you on the cuboid (just above where the bone slopes back to the point at the end) as shown below:

Next position the navicular below the cuneiforms so that it is curving away from them, with the point at the medial cuneiform edge.

For the  dorsal cuneo1-navicular ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next st. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in these 2sts. ch1, turn
Row 3: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off

Sew the this to the lower end of the side facing you of the medial cuneiform, with the other side being sewn to the left side of the top of the navicular as shown below.

For the other dorsal cuneo-navicular ligaments (make 3):
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next st. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off

The first of these ligaments should be sew to the lower edge of the intermediate cuneiform and the edge of the navicular just beside where you attached the previous ligament.

The other should be sewn to the lower edge of the lateral cuneiform, slightly to the left, and the other side should be sewn to the upper edge of the navicular, just to the right of where the previous ligament was attached.

For the dorsal cubonavicular ligament:
ch5
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 3sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in each of these 4sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the cuboid just to the right of the lower end of the ligament previously attached. The other end should be sewn to the navicular just to the right of where the previous ligament was attached.

The next step is to position the calcaneus. This should be positioned so that the fasten-off edge is below the cuboid and the sustentaculum tali is pointing to the left. The posterior facet should be facing upwards (as shown below).

For the dorsolateral calcaneocuboid ligament:
ch5
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 3 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the cuboid jut to the right of the ligament you last attached. Sew the other end to the upper edge of the cuneiform, about 1/3 of the way along from the right edge.

Place the talus to the right of the calcaneus. The calcaneal articular surface should be on the bottom on the side furthest away from you, as shown below.

For the dorsal talonavicular ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. ch1, turn (3sc)
Rows 2 - 10 (9 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 11: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one side of this to the upper face of the talus so that it curves around the edge, as shown below. Sew the other side to the edge of the navicular, close to where the cuneo-navicular ligaments were attached.

For the cervical ligament:
ch5
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 3 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this ligament to the centre of the face on the right-hand side of the talus  (see image)
Sew the other end of the calcaneus.

The next 2 ligaments form the bifurcate ligament, which begins at on the calcaneus and then branches off into a v-shape. I have therefore made it in 2 parts.

For the calneonavicular component of the bifurcate ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the right-hand side of the navicular, and the other to the left-hand side of the end of the calcaneus (as shown below)

For the medial calcaneocuboid component of the bifurcate ligament:
ch6
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then sc in each of the next 4 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the cuboid in between the 2 ligaments that are already attached. The other end should be threaded underneath the calneonavicular component and sewn to the calcaneus just to the left of it.

You should now turn the bones over so you can work on the plantar ligaments (those on the bottom of the foot). I have propped the bones up slightly so they are easier to see.
The calcaneus should be resting on top of the talus. It should keep its place better once we have added more ligaments.

For the plantar cuneo3-cuboid ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in both of these chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one side of the to the left-hand side of the 3rd cuneiform, to the face closest to you. The other side of the ligament should be sewn to the centre of the light-hand side of the cuboid. Make sure that the point on the end of the cuboid (next to the calcaneus) is lying on the right-hand side of the bone when you do this.

For the navicular-cuneo3 ligament:
ch6
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 4 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the lower side of the 3rd cuneiform, to the face closest to you next to where you attached the previous ligament.

The other end should be sewn to the navicular, approximately in the centre of edge facing you.

For the interosseous intercuneiform (C1-C2) ligament:
ch3
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then make 3sc in the first chain st you made. Make 2sc in the back loop of the first chain st you crocheted into (6sc)
Fasten off
Sew this between the first and second cuneiform, just above where you attached the dorsal ligament. Note that the image below is looking from the end of the foot (where you will later attach the metatarsals).

For the lateral interossus (C2-C3) ligament:
ch3
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then make 3sc in the first chain st you made. Make 2sc in the back loop of the first chain st you crocheted into (6sc)
Fasten off
Sew this in the gap between the 2nd and 3rd cuneiform, just above the dorsal ligament.

For the planar intercuneiform ligament:
ch2
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in this st
Fasten off
One one edge of this (perpendicular to the grain of the rows) to the end of the intermediate cuneiform closest to you. The other end should be sewn to the left-hand side of cuneiform 1

For the navicular-cuneo2 ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st

Rows 2 - 3: (2 rows) sc in both sts. ch1, turn
Row 4: sc in both sts
Fasten off

sc one side of this ligament to the right-hand side of the cuboid, around where the pointed end section is. Sew the other side the the centre of the edge facing you of the navicular. The cast-off end of this bone should tuck below the point on the end of the cuboid.

For the plantar calcaneonavicular ligament:
ch6
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 4sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: hdc2, sc, slip2. turn

Sew one edge of this to the curve of the lower side of the cuboid. The other side should be sewn to the calcaneus, as shown below.

Turn the foot around so that it is on its side, with the 1st cuneiform closest to you on  the left.

For the long calcaneocuboid ligament (this forms part of the long plantar ligament):
ch19
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then sc in each of the next 17sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 3: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one end of this ligament to the centre of the cuboid, and the other to the lower end of the calcaneus, around the section where you started decreasing the number of stitches to form the bump at the end of the bone (as shown below - the second image shows the side view)

For the posterior talocalcaneal ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the 2 next chain sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in both sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to right-hand side of the base of the section you added on after making the main body of the bone (see image below). The other end should be sewn to the calcalneus, just slightly in from the right-hand end.

For the medial talocalcaneal ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in both sts

Sew this between the base of the proximal phalange and the metatarsal of the big toe

Section 3: The foot-toe ligaments

We will now move onto adding the toe bones. I will start with the bones of the pinkie toe and move through to the big toe.

Start by turning the foot so that the dorsal face is upwards and place the pinkie toe next to the cuboid so that the end curves around the side of the bone.

For the dorsal cubo-M5 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. ch1 turn (3sc)
Rows 2 - 3: (2 rounds) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 4: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one side of this to the middle of the curve on the base of the toe. Sew the other end to the right-hand corner of the top of the cuboid, as shown below.

Next position the toe connected to M4 next to the pinkie toe. It should be positioned so that it bends downwards (the parts of the joint capsule you sewed closed should be on the lower side)

For the dorsal cubo-M4 ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn (2sc)
Row 2: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the base of metatarsal 4, and the other end to the upper edge of the cuboid.

For the cuneiform3-M3 ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn (2sc)
Row 2: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the base of the 3rd metatarsal, and the other side to the top edge of the 3rd cuneiform

For the cuneiform2-M2 ligament:
ch3
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the following chain st. ch1, turn (2sc)
Row 2: sc in both of these sts
Fasten off

Sew one end to the base of metatarsal 2 and the other to the centre of the top edge of the 2nd cuneiform

For the cuneiform3-M2 ligament:
ch5
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 3 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the base of the 2nd metatarsal, just right of the previous ligament you attached, and the other to the 3rd cuneiform to the left of where the last ligament you attached is found.

For the cuneiform1-M2 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end to the base of metatarsal 2 just to the left of where you attached the cuneiform2-M2 ligament. The other end should be sewn to the top left-hand corner of cuneiform 1.

For the dorsal Cuneo1-M1 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 2sts
Rows 2 - 6: (5 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn. ch1, turn (3sc)
Row 7: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew to the base of the 1st metatarsal. The other edge should be sewn to the upper edge of the face closest to you of the 1st cuneiform.

Now we will work on the plantar ligaments
Turn over the foot so the plantar side is facing upwards.

For the Cuneo1-M1 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. ch1, turn
Rounds 2 - 9: (8 rounds) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 10: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one edge of this to the base of the first metatarsal, and the other end to the upper edge of the first cuneiform

The next 2 ligaments actually form one ligament which begins at the first cuneiform and branches into 2, but I have made them separately.

For the Cuneo1-M2 ligament:
ch9
Row 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook and the next 7sts
Fasten off

Sew on end of this to the base of metatarsal 2, and the other end to the lower edge of the face closest to you of the first cuneiform, as shown below.

For the cuneo1-M3 ligament:
ch9
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 7sts
Row 2: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew on end of this to the base of metatarsal 3 , and the other end to the same place on the first cuneiform as you attached the cuneo1-M2 ligament.

The cuneo3-M3,4 ligament again divides into 2, and so I have made it as 2 separate ligaments.

For the cuneo3-M3 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the top edge of  cuneiform 3, and the other end to the base of metatarsal 3.

For the cuneo3-M4 ligament:
ch7
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 5sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the base of metatarsal 4, and the other end to cuneiform 3, in the same position as where to you attached the cuneo3-M3 ligament.

For the cubo-M4 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the base of metatarsal 4, and the other end to the right-hand side of the upper edge of the cuboid. (as shown below).

For the cubo-M5 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew one end of this to the centre of the base of metatarsal 5, and the other end to the left-hand side of the upper edge of the cuboid.

The next step is to create the interossus ligaments, which fit between the metatarsals at their base.

For the cuneo1-metatarsal2 ligament (AKA Lisfrac's liagment):
ch5
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2sts, then make 3sc in the first chain st you made. Sc in the back of the previous chain sts you crocheted into in turn, then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (10sc)
Rounds 2 - 4: (3 rounds) sc in each st
Round 5: sc3, sc3tog, sc2, sc3tog (6sc)
Fasten off

Slip this in between the 1st and 2nd metatarsal so that the grain of the rows is parallel to the direction of the metatarsals.

Sew one end of this to the very top of the 1st cuneiform, and the other end to metatarsal 2, as shown below.

For the middle interossus ligament:
The exact positioning of this ligament changes from person to person but I have used the most common
arrangement in this skeleton.
ch4
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, sc in the next chain st, then make 3sc in the first chain st you made. Sc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into, then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (8sc)
Round 2: sc in each st
Round 3: make 2sc in the first st, sc3, make 2sc in the next st, sc3 (10sc)
Round 4: sc in each st
Round 6: make 2sc in the first st, sc3, make 2sc in the next st, sc5 (12sc)
Round 7: sc in each st
Round 8: (slightly under 1 round) sc, make 2sc in the next st, sc3, make 2sc in the following st, sc5 (14sc)
Round 9: sc3tog, sc4, sc3tog, sc3 (10sc)
Round 10: sc3tog, sc2, sc3tog (6sc)
Fasten off

Place this in between metatarsals 2 and 3. Sew the cast-on edge to the top of the 2nd cuneiform, then flatten the other end slightly, sewing one face to metatarsal 2 and the other to metatarsal 3.

For the third interossus ligament:
ch5
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2sts, then make 3sc in the first chain st you made. Sc in the back of the previous chain sts you crocheted into in turn, then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (10sc)
Rows 2 - 3: (2 rows) sc in each st
Row 4: sc3, sc3tog, sc2, sc3tog (6sc)
Fasten off

Place this in between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals. Sew the bottom of the ligament to the top of the 3rd cuneiform and the top to the top of the 3rd metatarsal.

We will now work on the intermetatarsal ligaments, starting with the dorsal ones.
Begin by turning  your foot over to the dorsal side.

For the M2-M3 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew between the 2 metatarsals just above the interossus ligament.

For the M3-M4 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew between the 2 metatarsals just above the interossus ligament.

For the M4-M5 ligament:
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew between the M4 and M5 ligaments

Now turn the foot back over to make the plantar ligaments:

For the plantar intermetatarsal ligaments (make 3):
ch4
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts
Fasten off

Sew between the metatarsals the same way as you did for the dorsal ligaments.

For the deep transverse metatarsal ligament:
ch29
Row 1; sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then sc in each of the following 27 chain sts. ch1, turn
Row 2: sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew over the head of each of the metatarsals (as shown below)
