Sternum

This pattern is part of a series of patterns I'm releasing that fit together to form a life-sized skeleton. This is probably the simplest pattern in this series, so is a good place to start.




Difficulty:


Easy - medium
The cartilaginous section at the base (not shown in the image above) can be a bit fiddly, but you can leave this off if you prefer

You will need:
  • Anchor creativa fino cotton in white
  • Rico essentials #10 cotton in pale yellow
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • A 1mm crochet hook
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • A darning needle
  • A pair of scissors 

For the manubrium:
With the 2.5mm hook and white yarn Ch5
Round 1: Sc in the 2nd chain ct from hook and the next 2 chain sts. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of each of the previous 2 chainsts you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (10sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc3, make 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc3, make 2sc in each of the next 2sts (16sc)Round 2: sc, make 2sc in the next st, sc3, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times, sc3, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) twice (22sc)Rounds 3 - 5: (3 rounds) Sc in each stRound 6: make 2sc in the first st, sc9, make 2sc in each of the next 2sts, sc9, make 2sc in the last stRound 7: make 2sc in the first st, sc11, 2sc twice, sc11, 2scRounds 8 - 9: (2 rounds) Sc in each stRound 10: 2sc twice, sc12, 2sc 3 times, sc12, 2sc twiceRound 11: 2sc 3 times, sc15, 2sc 3 times, sc14, 2scRounds 12-13: (2 rounds) Sc in each  stRound 14: Sc2tog, Sc3tog, sc2tog, sc14, sc2tog, sc3tog, sc2tog, sc13, sc2togRound 15: Sc2tog twice, sc12, sc2tog 3 times, sc3, ch1, skip19Round 16: Sc3, sc2tog twice, sc2, sc2tog twiceRound 17: Sc2tog
Fasten offRejoin yarn to round 14 to the 4th st from this section, as shown below
Round 15: Sc in this st and the next 3sts, sc2tog 3 times, sc3, ch1Round 16: Sc in the first st of the previous round and the next 2sts, sc2tog twice, sc2, sc2tog twiceRound 17: Sc2tog twiceFasten off


For the body:Ch3Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (6sc)Round 2: Sc in each stRound 3: Sc2, make 3sc in the next st, sc2, make 3sc in the last st (10sc)Round 4: Sc3, make 3sc in the next st, sc4, make 3sc in the following st, sc (14sc)Round 5: Sc4, make 3sc in the next st, sc6, make 3sc in the following st, sc2 (18sc)Rounds 6 - 7: (2 rounds) Sc in each stRound 8: Sc6, make 3sc in the next st, sc8, make 3sc in the following st, sc2 (22sc)Rounds 9 - 23: (15 rounds) Sc in each stRound 24: Sc9, sc2tog, sc9, sc2tog (20sc)Round 25: Sc in each stRound 26: Sc8, sc2tog, sc8, sc2tog (18sc)Rounds 27 - 29: (3 rounds) Sc in each stRound 30: Sc, make 2sc in the next st, sc8, make 2sc in the following st, sc7 (20sc)Round 31: Sc2tog twice, sc4, sc2tog twice, sc4, sc2tog (16sc)Round 32: Sc3tog, sc3, sc4tog, sc2, sc2tog (10sc)Fasten offStuff

Sew the upper part to the cast-off edge of this

For the xyphoid process (optional):With a 1mm hook and yellow #10 crochet cotton make a magic loop with 4scRound 1: make 2sc in each st (8sc)Round 2: (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 4 times (12sc)Rounds 3 - 6: (4 rounds) Sc in each stStuff firmlyRound 7: Sc, sc4tog, sc2, sc3tog, sc (7sc)Fasten offSew this to the bottom of the body
